EL ALMA NO MIDE ... THE SOUL DOES NOT MEASURE ...
Carlos Barbarito trans. Stefan Beyst
El alma no mide, no significa.
El cuerpo mide pero no perdura,
significa piedra blanda,
tierra que no acoge.
¿A qué o a quién semeja?
Se dirige, todo uñas, y ojos, y uñas,
a algo oscuro y remoto
que no sabe que,
en la punta más lejana del mundo,
existe de lo que fuera bosque
apenas una desordenada, menguante hojarasca.
The soul does not measure, does not signify.
The body measures but does not last,
it signifies soft stone,
earth that does not shelter
What or whom does it resemble?
It moves, all nails, and eyes, and nails,
to something dark and remote
and does not know that
at the most distant end of the world,
of what was a forest there remains
hardly a decomposed, decaying leaf.
