THE JIMENA BALLADS - 1 JIMENA'S PLIGHT
Anon. 16c. trans. Michael Smith

Grande rumor se levanta
de gritos, armas y voces
en el palacio de Burgos,
donde son los ricos hombres.

Y a las puertas del palacio
hallan a Jimena Gómez,
desmelenado el cabello,
llorando a su padre el conde,

Justicia, buen rey, te pido
y venganza de traidores.
Y tú matador cruel,
no por mujer me perdones.

Vieron al soberbio mozo
el rostro airado que pone,
de doña Jimena oyendo
lo que dicen sus clamores.

En esto viendo Jimena
que Rodrigo no responde,
y que tomando las riendas
en su caballo se pone,

el rostro volviendo a todos,
por obligalles da voces,
y viendo que no le siguen
grita: - Venganza, señores.

At the palace in Burgos
where the magnates are,
suddenly there's an outbreak
of cries and clank of arms.

All rush to encounter
Jimena Gómez, who wails
for the Count her father;
her hair is disarrayed.

'Good King, I must have justice,
that treason be repaired;
and me, O ruthless killer,
a woman, do not spare.'

The proud youth was seen
to show an angry face,
aware of Lady Jimena
and the clamour that she raised.

Jimena waits in vain
for Rodrigo's response;
instead he grasps the reins
and climbs on his horse.

She surveys all present
and would have them sworn;
she sees that they don't follow,
and shouts: 'Vengeance, my Lords!'
