COBARDÍA COWARDICE
Amade Nervo tr. James H. Donalson

Pasó con su madre. ¡Qué rara belleza!
¡Qué rubios cabellos de trigo garzúl!
¡Qué ritmo en el paso! ¡Qué innata realeza
de porte! ¡Qué formas bajo el fino tul! ...
Pasó con su madre. Volvió la cabeza:
¡me clavó muy honda su mirada azul!

Quedé como en éxtasis ...
......................................Con febril premura
„¡Síguela!" gritaron cuerpo y alma al par.
... Pero tuve miedo de amar con locura,
de abrir mis heridas, que suelen sangrar
¡y no obstante toda mi sed de ternura,
cerrando los ojos, la dejé pasar!

She passed by with her mother. Such a rare beauty!
Her hair as blonde as finest wheat!
How rhythmic was her walk! Such an inborn royal
bearing! What forms beneath her fine tulle! ...
She passed by with her mother. She turned her head:
Her blue glance pierced me deeply!

I was as in ecstasy ...
................................With feverish insistence
my body and soul cried out together "Follow her!"
... But I was afraid of loving madly,
of opening my wounds, which usually bleed
and notwithstanding all my thirst for tenderness,
I closed my eyes and let her pass by.
