AMO AMOR I LOVE LOVE
Gabriela Mistral trans. Brian Cole

No te vale ponerle gesto audaz, ceño grave:

It walks freely in the fields and beats its wings in the wind,
throbs with life in the sun and dresses up in the pine-grove,
it is no use your forgetting it like a nasty thought:
.........you really ought to listen!

It speaks the language of bronze and the language of birds,
hesitant, imperative requests of the sea.
It is no use your rebutting it and frowning darkly:
.........you ought to receive it as a guest!

It shows signs of mastery; excuses do not soften it.
It destroys vases of blossom, cracks the deep glacier -
it is no use your saying you refuse to give it lodging:
.........you ought to receive it as a guest!

It has subtle sophistries in its shrewd rejoinders,
a wise man's arguments, but in a woman's voice.
Human science can save you, without divine science;
.........you really ought to believe it!

It throws you a linen bandage; you endure it.
It offers you a warm arm, you cannot escape it.
It begins to walk, you follow bewitched though seeing:
.........what a cause to die for!
