SONETO DE LA GUIRNALDA DE ROSAS |
SONNET OF THE GARLAND OF ROSES
Federico García Lorca | trans. Brian Cole
¡Esa guirnalda! ¡pronto! ¡que me muero! | That garland! Hurry! Grievous is the pain!
¡Teje deprisa! ¡canta! ¡gime! ¡canta! | Weave it quickly! Sing and groan and sing!
| que la sombra me enturbis la garganta | How this darkness makes my gullet sting
| y otra vez viene y mil la luz de enero. | and January's light still comes again.
| Entro lo que me quieres y te quiero, | For what you want of me and I of you,
| aire de estrellas y temblor de planta, | a gust of stars and trembling greeneries,
| espesura de anémonas levanta | there grows a thicket of anemones
| con oscuro gemir un aņo entero. | where dark groans block it out the whole year through.
| Goza el fresco paisaje de mi herida, | Enjoy the cooling landscape of my wound.
| quiebra juncos y arroyos delicados. | Break down the reeds and stamp where streams would wind,
| Bebe en muslo de miel sangre vertida. | and drink from honeyed thigh the welling blood.
| Pero ¡pronto! Que unidos, enlazados, | But quick, before united, intertwined,
| boca rota de amor y alma mordida, | with broken mouths and souls chewed up by love
| el tiempo nos encuentra destrozados. | we are destroyed by the eternal power of Time.
