FRESNOS ASH-TREES
Robert Gurney trans. Brian Cole

Había una parcela
de tierra baldía
cerca de mi casa
cuando era niño
que era mi preferida.

Tenía una fila
de fresnos altos.

Me encantaba
treparme
hasta la cima.

Luego,
como un gato,
no sabía bajar.

Dicen
que las parejas
se revolcaban
en la hierba
pero yo no las veía.

Los yanquis
lo llamaban
el callejón
de los enamorados.

Nosotros
el sendero
de ¿Ténes chicle, compadre?

There was a patch
of waste land
near my home
when I was a child,
which I loved.

There was a line
of tall ash-trees.

I adored
climbing
up to the top.

Then,
like a cat,
I could not get down.

They say
that couples
used to roll
in the grass
but I never saw them.

The Yanks
called it
"lovers' lane",

but we called it
the lane of
"Got any gum, chum?"
