THE GRAMOPHONE EL GRAMÒFON
Robert Gurney trans. Pere Bessó (into Catalan)

I had often wondered
what it would be like
in Santiago de Chuco.

I often wondered
what I would find.

I didn’t expect to discover
Vallejo’s old gramophone,
the one my grandmother had
in her living room
in Union Street,
Dunstable.

The same handle,
the same needle,
the same white dog
sitting listening,
its head on one side,
to a large trumpet-shaped speaker.

The same strange words
that puzzled me as a child:
His Master’s Voice.

Em preguntava sovint
com seria
Santiago de Chuco.

M’imaginava
quč hi trobaria.

No esperava descobrir-hi
la vella gramola de César Vallejo,
la mateixa que ma iaia tenia
al living de sa casa
a Union Street,
Dunstable.

La mateixa maneta,
la mateixa pua,
el mateix gos blanc assegut
amb el cap de costat
escoltant el mateix parlant
en forma de trompeta

i les mateixes paraules estranyes
que em tenien intrigat:
His Master's Voice,
La Veu del Seu Amo.
