EL CANTAR DE MÍO CIDfrom "THE SONG OF MY CID
Anon. 12c.trans. Brian Cole

El Cid a doña Ximena · ivala abraçar;

"A Dios vos acomiendo · e al Padre spiritual;

A tan grand sabor · fabló Minaya Álbar Fañez:
"Cid, ¿do son vuestros esfuerços? ·
en buena ora nasquiestes de madre;
Aun todos estos duelos · en gozo se tornarán;

Soltaron las riendas, · pienssan de andar;

The Cid's farewell to his wife and daughters, sent for
safety to the monastery at Cardeña

When prayers were done, and they had finished the mass
they left the church and then were ready to ride.
El Cid went to embrace the Lady Ximena;
the Lady Ximena kissed the hand of El Cid,
with tears she could not stop that filled her eyes.
He turned to his daughters and eyed them close:

"I entrust you to God and to your spiritual father;
now we must part: God knows when we meet again!"
Their eyes were wet with tears you never saw,
and so they parted, as a nail from the quick.

My Cid with his vassals made to ride away,
turning his head to be sure they all will follow.
With joy Minaya Álbar Fáñez spoke:
"Cid, whence comes your strength?
Lucky the hour you were born to your mother;
we want to be on our way, let's not waste time.
All these troubles we suffer will turn to joy;
God who gave us our souls will surely counsel us ..."

They let the reins fall slack and made to ride;
the time draws near when they must leave the realm.
