For Zbigniew Herbert Oedipus naked under dawn's mantle casually slung over his right shoulder leans over the Sphinx the better to hear its winged words out of the spirit of Egyptian music A clasically profiled face greasy locks with a raven sheen an oar under his arm or a spear close by the killer's heavy hands and incestuous loins. The hearty medium of guiltless guilt reeks like a scapegoat. Left hand braced on knee and elbow holding dawn's mantle so as to cover his crotch the wretched carrier of evil gazes at the Sphinx's bright breast, at a being perfect as the gods' curse, apple?round breasts standing to attention and angrily turned against Thebes by Olympian plastic surgeons. See, now ... How he drives his calf's stare into the swollen hieroglyphics of the beast's nipples as if his pupils had sucked from them cunningly the answer to the childish riddle. And what will follow has been known for ages: the dark and bitter pit will sooner or later pounce on one and all |
