BARCAROLA BARCAROLLE
Roy Fernandez trans. James H. Donalson
(from Galician)
Quand' eu vejo las ondas
e las muit' altas ribas,
logo mi veen ondas
al cor pola velida:
maldito sea 'l mar
que mi fez tanto mal!

Nunca vejo las ondas
nem as muit' altas rocas
que mi non venhan ondas
al cor pela fremosa:
maldito sea 'l mar
que mi fez tanto mal!

Se eu vejo las ondas
e vejo las costeiras,
logo mi veen ondas
al cor pola ben feita:
maldito sea 'l mar
que mi fez tanto mal'.
When I look at the breakers
and the heights of the seashore
other waves then come rolling
in my heart for my mistress:
and now I curse the sea
for the ills done to me!

So I never see breakers
nor the rocks of the seashore
without waves that come rolling
in my heart for that beauty:
and now I curse the sea
for the ills done to me!

If I look at the breakers
and I look at the seacoast
other waves then come rolling
in my heart for one shapely:
and now I curse the sea
for the ills done to me!
