ULTIMO SOGNOFINAL DREAM
Giovanni Pascolitrans. Alan Marshfield
Da un immoto fragor di carriaggi A railway noise, trains shunting in one place,
Ferrei, moventi verso l'infinito an infinite, jarring clangour and ado;
tra schiocchi acuti e fremiti selvaggi ... vibrations uncontrolled distorting space ...
un silenzio improvviso. Ero guarito.from this a sudden silence. I was through.
Era spirato il nembo del mio male The thick and sudden drench of illness died
in un alito. Un muovere di ciglia; in one last breath. My eyes moved as I lazed
e vidi la mia madre al capezzale: at peace upon that sickbed; at my side
io la guardava senza meraviglia.I saw my mother and was not amazed.
Libero ... inerte sì, forse, quand'io Freedom! ... without an ounce of strength should I
le mani al petto sciogliere valessi: wish to unfold the hands beneath my chin:
ma non volevo. Udivasi un fruscio but I had no such wish. There was a sigh
sottile, assiduo, quasi di cipressi;as though of cypresses, insistent thin;
quasi d'un fiume che cercasse il mare or stream on a wide plain which sought to flow
inesistente, in un immenso piano: out to an ocean that was non-existent:
io ne seguiva il vano sussurrare, I went where its bare whispering might go,
sempre lo stesso, sempre più lontano.always the same, always and ever distant.
