AMOR, EO CHERO MIA DONNA

Lapo Gianni tr. Brian Cole
Amor, eo chero mia donna in domino,
L'Arno balsamo fino,
Le mura di fiorenza inargentate,
Lu Rughe di Cristallo lastricate,
Fortezze alte merlate,
Mio fedel fosse ciaschedun Latino,
Il mondo in pace, secuor'l camino,
Non mi noccia vicino,
E l'aira temperata verno e state,
Mille donne e donzelle adornate,
Sempre d'amor pregiate,
Meco cantasser la sera e'l mattino,
E giardin fruttuosi di gran giro
Con grande uccellagione,
Pien di condutti d'acqua e cacciagione,
Bel mi trovasse come fu Absalone,
Sansone pareggiasse e Salamone,
Servaggi di Barone,
Sonar viole, chitarre, e canzone,
Poscia dover entrar nel Cielo empiro.
Giovene, sana, allegra, e secura
Fosse mia vita, finchè'l modo dura.
Love, I ask to have my lady in my power,
for the Arno to be fine balsam,
the walls of Florence to be silvered,
the streets paved with crystal
high fortresses with battlements,
every Italian to be my bondsman;
for the world to be at peace, the roads safe;
no neighbours harming me;
and the air mild in summer and winter.
A thousand comely women and maids,
made beautiful by love,
to sing with me at evening and at morning,
and fruitful gardens spreading wide,
with many flocks of birds,
full of little streams and hunting grounds.
I ask to be as handsome as Absalom,
the equal of Samson and Solomon,
with barons for servants,
with sounds of viols, guitars and song;
then to be sure of going to Heaven.
May my life be healthy, happy and safe
and young as long as the world may last.
