ES WAR EIN ALTER KÖNIGTHERE WAS AN AGÉD KING
Heinrich Heinetrans. Brian Cole
Es war ein alter König,There was an agéd king.
Sein Herz war schwer, sein Haupt war grau,His heart weighed down, his hair was white,
Der arme alte König,That poor old agéd king.
Er nahm eine junge Frau.He took him a young wife.
Es war ein schöner Page,There was a pretty page.
Blond war sein Haupt, leicht war sein Sinn,His hair was blond, his heart serene,
Er trug die seidne SchleppeHe carried the silken train
Der jungen Königin.Of his lovely young queen.
Kennst du das alte Liedchen?Do you know the old refrain?
Es klingt so süss, es klingt so trüb'!It sounds so sad, it sounds so sweet.
Sie mussten beide sterben,They both had to meet their death,
Sie hatten sich viel zu lieb.Their love was much too deep.
