SE J’AI AME ...NOW THAT I LOVE ...
Anon. Trouveres (early 13c.)tr. Peter Dean
Se j’ai ame n’en estre blasme quant sui assene
a la plus cortoise riens de Paris la cite.
Mes en tout mon vivant
n’en ai un biau semblant,
si est a tous fors a moi, franche et humiliant;
mais s’el seust de voir
com je l’aim sans decevoir,
el m’osast de doulor,
qu’ele me dounast s’amor.
Now that I love let none find fault with me
since she’s the finest lady in Paree.
But never in all my days
one comlier to the gaze,
to all but me open and humble in her ways;
if she were but aware
my love for her’s sincere,
she’d ease me of my pain,
she’d love me back again.
