Peter was born in Addlestone, Surrey, studied English at St Peter's College, Oxford and ran a large English Department in secondary education for twenty years before becoming a full-time poet and intermittent translator. For a similar period he was co-editor of the poetry quarterly "Agenda".

His main translations are: "Poems of François Villon", "Poems of Jules Laforgue" and "The Divine Comedy", in terza rima - all published by Anvil. He has just finished a complete version of "Les Amours Jaunes" by Tristan Corbière, also for Anvil Press Poetry.

His "Edge to Edge: Selected Poems" came out from Anvil in 1996 and from the same press "Under the Breath", his latest book of poems, is due in 2002. The Waywiser Press has just printed a new hardback edition of his sonnet sequence "One Another".

He has contributed to many magazines and journals, is a member of the Translators' Association, an editorial director of "Between the Lines", and editor of a poetry column for "Oxford Today".
