Alan was born in 1933 and was based in Portsmouth until 1955. He read English at King's College, London. Before retirement in 1997 he had been a Senior Teacher, Head of English and in later years Head of Computing, in various schools, for the most part in Barnet. He is married with two children.

He has published poetry and translations of poetry in slim volumes, anthologies, and numerous periodicals. In May 2003 his selected poems, with notes, appeared as a limited edition in a 600-page volume called the nature of things (Abraxas Press). A choice of his translations can be found in our Virtual Book Two; other translations, notably from Finnish, Italian, Thai and Classical Greek, have yet to be collected and republished.

A more extended and personal biography will be included in his own web site: when it goes on line in July or August 2003.
